Bush says troubled automakers must prove their long-term viability in order to receive government aid. Bush told an American news channel that no matter how important the companies were to the economy, it would be wrong to throw good money after bad. The statement came as automaker chiefs testified to Congress on planned restructuring measures in return for state aid. General Motors, Chrysler and Ford say they need a combined 34 billion dollars to prevent their companies from collapsing.
