The official death toll stands at 565 and nearly 12,000 Zimbabweans have been infected, forcing hundreds to cross the border with South Africa to seek treatment. Most public hospitals in the capital Harare have shut down due to chronic drug and equipment shortages. The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has announced emergency measures to increase health services and widen access to safe water in the poverty-stricken country. Meanwhile prominent African figures such as Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu have called for Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe to stand down for opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
